Final Project: Game Audio

Students will given a choice of gameplay videos. They will then need to create the sound and bring the scene to life. Students will have to plan and organize their studio recording session for Foley and voice recording. They will also have access to the portable recorder if required.

Our lecturer had taught us some techniques to manipulate the sounds we recorded.

Gameplay Video
The lecturer provided us 5 gameplay videos and the game that I chose is this one. I was keen to create sound effects that match the cute and interesting in the game.

Reference study
I have rarely played this type of game before, so I pay more attention to what the teacher said in class to show us the works of the previous students and explain to us. For this reason, I specially went to the Internet to find some sound effects about this type of game.

I searched and collected some ways to get such game sound effects from the Internet, and then I found some tools at home, used some musical instruments to make sounds and record the sound of wind blowing on the balcony on rainy days, for which I made a lot of effort.

Here are my AU fruition.

Next, I will show the process of this homework and the details of the homework process.

I add all these sounds into four channels.

Audio Planning

After doing some reference study, I started planning the sounds that I needed for the gameplay video. I listed out all the actions and events that appeared in the video, such as character movement, interactions, and background ambience.

This planning stage helped me stay organized and made sure I did not miss out on any important sound effects. It also helped me think about how sound can support interaction, instead of just adding sound randomly.

Sound Recording

For the sound recording process, I tried to be creative with the tools and materials I had at home. I used some musical instruments as well as everyday objects to record different sound effects. Besides that, I also recorded environmental sounds, such as wind blowing on the balcony during rainy days, to create a natural ambience.

Although I did not have access to a professional studio, this process made me realize that many interesting sounds can be created using simple tools. Recording the sounds by myself also gave me more control when editing and manipulating them later.

Audio Editing and Manipulation

After recording the raw audio clips, I imported them into Adobe Audition for editing. Before manipulating the sounds, I first applied noise reduction to remove background noise. This step was important because most of the recordings were done in a normal environment instead of a soundproof studio.

Next, I experimented with different effects that the lecturer had taught us, such as adjusting pitch, equalization, reverb, and layering. Through trial and error, I slowly learned how small changes could significantly affect how a sound feels. Some sounds needed to be softer and lighter to match the cute style of the game, while others needed clearer impact to match character actions.

Audio Syncing

Once the sound effects were edited, I synced them carefully with the gameplay video. I adjusted the timing of each sound so that it matched the character’s actions and movements on screen. This step required patience, as even a small timing mismatch could make the interaction feel unnatural.

By syncing the audio with the visuals, the gameplay felt more complete and responsive.

Final Outcome

In the final result, the gameplay video felt more lively and immersive compared to the original silent version. The sound effects helped enhance the cute and playful atmosphere of the game, while also supporting the interactions shown in the video.

Although the project was challenging, especially for someone who was not familiar with this type of game at first, I was satisfied with the overall outcome.

Reflection

Through this project, I learned that sound design plays an important role in shaping the player’s experience. As a student, this project helped me understand that good game audio does not rely only on expensive equipment, but more on careful observation, planning, and experimentation.

I also learned to be more patient during the editing and syncing process, as sound design requires a lot of testing and adjustment. Overall, this project improved my understanding of how audio supports interaction and gameplay, and it was a valuable learning experience for my future projects in interaction design.
