Favourite Game: VALORANT
Game icon:
As a design student, I find VALORANT to be my favourite video game because of its balance between competitive gameplay, strategic depth, and highly stylized visual and audio design. Developed by Riot Games, VALORANT is a 5v5 tactical shooter that blends precise gunplay with unique agent abilities.
What Makes VALORANT Playful?
1. Strategic Diversity
Each match is different because of team compositions, map dynamics, and tactical approaches. Players must think critically, adapt in real time, and communicate effectively.
2. Distinct Visual and Character Design
From a design perspective, the agents are visually iconic and distinct. Their silhouettes, colours, and abilities are well crafted to help players quickly identify them, which is critical in fast-paced gameplay. This enhances immersion and usability, both key principles in good interactive design.
3. Tactical Gameplay with Room for Creativity
While it is a shooter, VALORANT also allows for creative plays using agent abilities like smokes, walls, teleports, and recon tools. This gives players the chance to experiment, improvise, and express their individual style.
4. Team Collaboration and Communication
Playfulness isn’t just about fun—it’s about engagement. VALORANT pushes players to constantly interact, strategize, and support each other. This type of social interaction adds depth to the experience.
5. Progression and Competitive Motivation
With ranks, achievements, and unlockable cosmetics, players feel rewarded for improvement. The emotional arc of learning and mastering mechanics adds a strong motivational loop.
6. Audio Design and Feedback
Sound in VALORANT is a crucial element of gameplay. Footsteps, gunfire, and ability sounds are finely tuned to provide feedback. As a design student, I appreciate how auditory cues are integrated into the game mechanics so intuitively.
Conclusion:
VALORANT is playful not just because it is competitive, but because it is designed in a way that encourages experimentation, interaction, creativity, and personal growth—all while maintaining strong aesthetic and user experience principles.
